Sony has essentially put the final nail in the coffin for the PS Vita as shipments for the handheld have stopped in the country where it performed best.
Sometime last month, the Japanese page for the remaining PS Vita models was updated, notifying fans and consumers that shipments on both would be ending in the coming days. Now, it’s confirmed that the day has finally come as shipments have stopped altogether for the handheld console. This is essentially the final nail in the coffin for PS Vita as the handheld saw the most success in Japan.
Many western fans of the PS Vita, myself included, opted to import the wide variety of colors and special edition models of the PS Vita as the device itself isn’t hampered by any sort of region locking system. Once my original OLED model finally tapped out on me, I happily imported a new slim model.
I like to compare the PS Vita to the Dreamcast as I see many similarities between both. They were definitely ahead of their time, and have a widely unique slew of games for fans to pick up. Of course, the handheld did have problems like lackluster first-party games (but a few really great ones) and incredibly overpriced memory cards that just made the full purchase skyrocket in price. Nevertheless, we got a pretty solid amount of time and games out of the handheld’s total seven-year lifespan and it’s really quite heartwarming that the fandom was able to keep it alive for so long.
If you’re still interested in snagging one for yourself, I’d definitely look into getting one now rather than later. Prices appear to be going up for brand new models across all retailers. If I were you though, I’d try and get a used one as it can save you a lot of money that you can then put towards games or a memory card. Also, if you’re looking to hold onto the device for a long time do yourself a favor and go with the Slim model. I love the OLED but found that problems will inevitably arise with it over time.
Additionally, if you’re looking for some great games to play, check out Freedom Wars, Persona 4 Golden, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush, and Killzone: Mercenary. The PS Vita originally launched in Japan in December of 2011 and didn’t make its way to the west until a few months later in 2012. As of right now, Sony has no plans to release a new handheld device.
