Say what you will about the ridiculously-popular Fortnite, but Epic Games sure does know how to how to throw an event. Whether it’s adding Thanos from Avengers: Infinity War into the game or blowing up the sky with a rocket in an in-game event, Fortnite has been doing some left-field stuff to keep the game fresh. The battle royale game’s “Fortnitemares” Halloween event ended in the strangest way possible, one that felt like it was directed by David Lynch of Twin Peaks fame.
One of the defining traits of Fortnite season 6 has been the Loot Lake island floating in the air, thanks to the mysterious cube that has been present for quite some time in the game. In an in-game event that occurred during all instances of the game concluded with the cube exploding, taking players into (what I guess?) another dimension. It’s easier shown than described, so check out the video that one of my own friends and Fortnite buddies captured himself below.
Not only was everyone transported into this strange plane of existence, but everyone also experienced what is basically a cutscene in the middle of a multiplayer match, with player characters encountering… whatever that friendly butterfly thing is. Immediately after, players were ejected from wherever they might have been to airdrop yet again, with a new area in place of the massive hole left in Loot Lake.
I’ve never understood what kind of “lore” Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode has tried to establish, as it’s all loose, on-the-spot, and borderline nonsensical, but I would be lying if I said that wasn’t at least intrigued by these efforts. I guess we’ll have to see what Fortnite does next with *check notes* balloons.
